NIFT selection is a multi-stage process. Students often prepare “everything at once” and end up under-prepared for the stage that actually decides their rank band. Separate the jobs of CAT, GAT and Situation Test clearly.
CAT: Creative Ability Test
CAT checks imagination, design sensitivity and the ability to communicate ideas visually. Neatness helps, but idea quality and clarity matter more than decoration.
GAT: General Ability Test
GAT is a structured aptitude paper. Quantitative ability, communication, analytical thinking and general knowledge appear in forms that reward calm accuracy more than last-minute cramming.
Strong sketching cannot fully rescue weak GAT accuracy, and high GAT scores still need a convincing creative paper. Plan both tracks weekly.
Situation Test
For relevant programmes, the Situation Test evaluates material handling, construction sense, concept clarity and presentation under time. Practice with real materials, not only theory videos.
